Origin Story:
When the Rodríguez family purchased Muxbal Estate in 1959, there was no road to the farm—you had to climb up the mountain on foot to reach the property. At that time, the farm had only three buildings: a small house overrun by pigs and chickens, and two dilapidated mills, one wet and one dry. The farmland itself needed to be completely replanted. Despite the less-than-ideal purchasing conditions, the family repaired the house and gradually replanted the farm with new coffee plants. It wasn’t until 1965 that they began constructing a road for mules to transport coffee down from the farm. Shortly after, in 1966, Enrique Rodríguez established a partnership with the local government to pave a road to Unión Juárez, which was finally completed in 1979. Today, Enrique’s son, Jorge, shares the thriving family farm he grew up on with the world through his coffee.
Finca Muxbal is located on a plateau at 1,560 meters above the foot of the Tacaná volcano, bordering Guatemala. The estate spans 236 hectares, of which 60% is planted with Catuai and Mundo Novo coffee varieties. The remaining 40% is an ecological reserve that protects rainforest, rivers, springs, flora, and fauna. The rich volcanic soil, sustainable environmental practices, shade coverage, and unique microclimate create ideal conditions for excellent coffee production. Muxbal is committed not only to environmental responsibility but also to social responsibility. Their facilities include a kitchen, tortilladora, dining room, and housing for all farm employees. Additionally, the farm provides schooling for the community’s children during the high season, ensuring that everyone is cared for and supported.
